Going from Crossdresser to Transgender

It may not be New Year's but I have resolved to start blogging more about what is going on with me so here we go.

It has been an interesting journey the last couple of months and really does show that you never know what curve balls life will throw you or what might be a turning point for you.

I have been a typical crossdresser ever since I was a young child. I would dress in private, feel guilty about it, purge then start again at a later point. It was never far from my mind even when I wasn't doing it and in times of severe crisis it was my fall back.

About three years ago I came out to my wife about my crossdressing. Knowing a lot of my past she was not overly surprised and vowed to be as supportive as she could be even though she wasn't happy about it. That was also the point at which I moved out of our bedroom and into the spare room. I can't say that was all that bad a thing as it let me wear a nightgown to bed and gave me a place to keep my clothes.

I was content to be nothing more than a crossdresser and continued to only do it occasionally until recently, and this is where the "you never know" part comes in.

I became involved with Sarnia-Lambton pride and attended the pride events in the middle of August. Because it was quite the distance from my house I had arranged to stay at a female friends house. It was a lot of fun dressing and hanging out with the girls which ended at about 3am. Exhausted from a night of partying I crashed for a few hours.

I awoke at about 6:30am and that was when I realized that I hadn't brought any male clothes with me to change into for the drive home. But as I sat there I also realized that I had no desire to change either. So, with makeup still on from the night before, I put on my pink shorts, camisole and women's running shoes and headed out. I had to stop at the local convenience store and it felt great to just walk in there not hiding it.

That was the turning point that made me decide to start living my life in the gender I felt comfortable with.

Since then I have met with a social worker to explore going on hormones and what the next steps will be. I will be seeing her again in a couple of weeks and it should be interesting. I will be going from a life of drag to drag being my life. My wife and I have officially separated but continue to live together as friends and she is supporting me in this journey.

The one low point is I need to find a job that will be supportive of my transition and so I can afford to buy all the clothing and stuff needed to live as a woman. So, if anyone out there knows of a company that is hiring from the LGBT community and is transgender friendly in Southwestern Ontario, let me know. I have many skills that could be beneficial.

ACT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!

I am sending this out to all members of the group because it is time to get down to brass tacks, so to speak, in regards to an alluring Affair (http://www.alluringaffair.ca). This is powerful event that is perfect for first timers, couples and experienced cd/tg's but we are have reached crunch time. We have managed to put this off in an attempt to get people to register but we can't do it any longer.

In order to make this an all-inclusive event we have to pay the resort to hold the rooms. The problem is we NEED people to commit before we can go any further with this.

I have received a lot of interest from people about attending this event but people are not putting down the money to commit and I would like to know why? After all, this is a great deal. Just look what it would cost if you were to purchase everything separately. If you were to pay for the rooms separately they would cost $447, the meals anywhere from $160 and up and of course there is the show, dance, with live band, and free workshops. To put all this together separately would cost you a lot more money.

You could, of course, cheap out but aren't you tired of being treated like a second class citizen? I know I am. When you compare it to an event I went to last year that cost me over $300, where I had to stay in a second rate hotel, was served Legion food (for the one meal that was included) and the entertainment was a DJ, I just cannot figure out what the hesitation is.

So here is the bottom line. The resort wants a deposit. We can hold them off for a couple of days but not any longer. So, if we do not see at least 15 people place their $350 deposit by Monday I will have no choice but to close this down. And if that happens I am not sure I will be able to convince my backers to try again next year.

As an incentive, I am also offering a percentage off your registration fee if you recommend us to your friends and they sign up. If two friends sign up, and tell us they learned about the event from you (or your website or your blog, etc.), you get a refund of 5% off your registration fee. Get three to five friends to register and tell us you sent them, and you get 10% off your registration fee. Remind your friends to tell us you sent them!

An Alluring Affair, an all-inclusive weekend November 6 -8, 2009, of workshops, fabulous food, top-level entertainment and networking, has chosen Deerhurst Resort in the beautiful Muskoka area of Ontario to host the event. A Life Spinning Wonderfully Out of Control

Wow, what a ride I have been on for the last few weeks. I have become involved with the revitalization of Pride in Sarnia, Ontario and has life ever become busy.

First off I must say that I thought Pride in this county was dead. The website had not been updated in over a year, there didn't seem to be any sort of stuff out there and the email links were dead. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to find a group on Facebook and contacted the site admin.

Turns out that there were a few dedicated people out there who were trying to get Pride up and running so I offered my help. The next thing I know I am sending suggestions for getting the word out, have brought in my marketing person and am rebuilding the website.

So, now the site is up and running and events are flowing along. We have a Family Pride afternoon with games, activities and entertainment for children of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender people and supporters followed by a bbg. In the evening there is a dance with drag performers and we are even working on a theatre night. It is so exciting and now I have offered to be on the committee as well so I will be able to help guide the future of LGBT events in Lambton county.

Sarnia-Lambton Pride is 15 August and is open to anyone who wants to attend. Show your support for the Lambton Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community by attending. I would love to have a number of other crossdressers join me for this party.

Personal Update

Well, I have been so busy lately that I really haven't had much time to write anything. So, I thought I would just throw out a quick update on what has been going on.

First, an alluring Affair, the all inclusive crossdress and transgender vacation/conference package that I am hosting, has been rolling along beautifully. There has been a lot of interest from a number of sisters who are looking for a place to go out en femme for the first time. It is not surprising since the enclosed nature of the resort creates a safe environment for any person going out for their first time dressed. You pick and choose how much, or little, you want to interact with the general public. Everything has been set up in a way to maximize the first time cross-dressers comfort so they can relax and enjoy the event without worrying about being hassled or attacked. And the staff of Deerhurst are thrilled that we will be there and are looking forward to treating us as the princesses we are.

Speaking of an alluring Affair, though, I did have to make a correction. I have been telling everyone that their registration fees covered accommodations in the Pavilion rooms. Turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. I was informed last night that the rooms we will be getting are called Junior suites. These rooms have a separate living area (with fireplace), kitchenette and are in a separate building called a sports villa. The villa features a common area where all the girls can gather to just hang out or party to their hearts content. They are also adjacent to the main pavilion so it is a short walk to all the great events offered by an alluring Affair. What else? Well, I have been working on creating an online, subscription based magazine for cross-dressers and transgendered people. The concept will feature news, entertainment, tips, travel and reviews from around the world. It will be in a multi-media format including video reports. I am hoping to also have a section for reports from transgender youth and female to male trans people. Stay tuned for more on that as time goes by.

The other big thing is I have become involved in the Sarnia-Lambton Pride organization. Until last week I thought the concept was dead but then discovered a small Facebook group for it. After looking at their website I contacted the admin with some suggestions and now it would seem I am part of the pride committee. The biggest challenge at the moment is to get the word out that their is a Pride so we can make it as successful as possible. The bigger it is this year the better we can do for next year. The drawback is I was very much looking forward to going to the Windsor, Ontario Pride this year but they are on back to back weekends so it would be a little much. But, if I can get my magazine concept up and running then I would have to attend both next year to be able to report on them. And, of course, Toronto Pride and Chatham-Kent Pride and Tri-Pride and Hamilton Pride and Detroit Pride, etc, etc. Now you can see why I want to make the magazine successful, lol.

Going Out En Femme For Your First Crossdressed Outing, This is The Place To Go

I've had some questions recently which got me to thinking about going out for the first time en femme. As a crossdresser this can be one of the scariest moments of your life and it especially difficult if you have no one to go with.

I remember my first time and I was terrified. I had decided to attend a gay pride in another city so I would not have to be worried about running into somebody I knew. I picked a hotel close to where the entertainment was taking place, packed all my crossdressing clothes, shoes, makeup and accessories and headed off full of anticipation of my first time in public en femme.

After checking into my hotel I started the preparations, shaving my legs and face, putting on my makeup and getting dressed. Wearing a short skirt, stockings and pumps I was ready to go and then it struck me. Even though the venue was only about a 5 minute walk away I still had to leave the room, take the elevator down to the lobby, go through the lobby and walk down a public street to get there. That is when the shakes started.

I would like to say that I was brave, held my head high and strode out of my room and embraced my first time out en femme but the reality was much different. Instead, there I sat, completely cross-dressed on the bed and hid. When I looked in the mirror I did not see a passable transgender person but some guy with too much makeup dressed like a woman, a fake, a fraud.

Eventually, once it became dark out, I screwed up enough courage to leave my room. After looking through the peep hole in the door to make sure the hallway was empty I slinked out of my room and, to avoid running into anybody else, walked down 6 flights of stairs and out a side door in 5" heels. Not exactly the most stellar moment in my life as a crossdresser.

And that is where my recent thinking starts. I have come a long way since then with outings to a local bar, the running of my store and now my new crossdressing vacation, an alluring Affair. I realized that if something like an alluring Affair had been available it would have alleviated some of my fear and made for a much more enjoyable first time out en femme.

Why is this? Because an alluring Affair is completely self enclosed. Once you arrive and change into your female persona you choose how much or little contact you have with the non-crossdressing public. Your accomodations and the conference are at the same place so the you can go from your room to the event without ever going outside. And also, you will be surrounded by other crossdressed and transgender people so you won't be alone like I was.

There will be no reason to cower in your room or avoid the elevators since chances are there will be other gurls right there with you. And you won't have to worry about the staff since not only are they expecting you to be en femme, they are looking forward to hosting this crossdress weekend. In fact, the award winning chef at Deerhurst, where we are holding this crossdress holiday, is already figuring fun new ways to present the meals (there was some mention of a chocolate mousse fountain cascading out of a chocolate high heel shoe)

The only drawback for the first time crossdress outing is that this event will spoil you, making it so you don't want to go back to the real world. Between the luxurious accomodations, first rate food (you won't find roast beef under a heat lamp at this venue), professional entertainment and all the fun things there are to do you won't want it to stop. Don't forget, this is the site of the 2010 G8 summit so you will be staying and eating like President Obama will next year. When was the last time you heard of a crossdresser who could boast they were treated like royalty while en femme?

Of course, there is also the problem of choosing what to do in the your female attire. After all, if the weather has cooperated, you can go horseback riding or play 18 holes of golf. For the more outdoor oriented you can go for a hike, rent a bike, take a hummer tour or go for a canoe trip in Algonquin park. Get together with some of the other gurls at an alluring Affair and you could even organize a paintball outing. And, if you don't want to actually leave the building, you could always see about playing a game of tennis at Deerhurst's indoor sportsplex, play some squash, take advantage of the fitness room or just relax at the indoor pool and hottub. Oh yeah, and don't forget to take advantage of the on site spa.

Of course there are the workshops as well. Whether you want to learn how to do crossdress makeup, find your feminine voice or walk like a girl, there is a workshop for you. And some of it prompted us to develop a payment plan to make it easier to attend and to allow people to take advantage of the current exchange rate discount.

The Canadian dollar is increasing in value against the American dollar and we don’t know how long we’ll be able to continue to offer this great price. By placing your deposit now, you are guaranteed attendance at the event and you get it at the great discounted price.

Our new payment plan allows you to place a deposit of $150 (US) and then pay the remainder in two further installments. In my ongoing effort to pull all the bits and pieces of information of interest to us together in one place I have created a "Places To Go" and "Conferences, Outtings and Holidays" section on my website sorted by location. In order to make this as comprehensive as possible, I need everyone's help.

If you know of any cd/tg friendly bars, clubs, restaurants, etc or an upcoming event of some sort please send me as much information as you can about it so I can make sure it is included. My intent is for this to be worldwide so it doesn't matter where it is. There are currently only a few locations to be able to post under but as I receive places I will be adding to the locations. (please include the closest major city as well)

Believe in yourself…

Okay, so Diana Ross may not have been singing to any of us, but the sentiment of the song still pertains (and who doesn’t like to start a blog with a song cue and a Diana Ross song at that?).

The message completely pertains to us however.

I had a journalist recently ask me if crossdressers had become more “passable” with the sophisticated products available to help us on our way. My response to him was that more than half the battle was to believe in yourself and in your “passability”.

Attitude and self-image are the defining elements of anyone. Where you wind up in life is determined by whether you live with a positive or negative attitude. How you get there is defined by how you feel about yourself.

Make-up, breast forms and fancy clothes are all just the outer shell. But even with the most expensive of these, if you don’t believe in who you are when en femme, no amount of purchased goods will make you ‘passable’.

Maybe it’s a little like method-acting, the famous Stanislavski style of preparing for a role on stage or in film. Actors who are trained in The Method spend time discovering the back-story – what is the history of my character, how does she walk, how does she talk, basically what motivates her? And then they live it on stage or screen.

If you find you’re not believing in yourself, perhaps this process will help you get there.

Thank You Windsor

I just thought I would take a moment to extend a great big thank you to the people at Windsor, Ontario Pride. I attended some of the events on the 18th and 19th of July and had a great time. It might not have been a huge crowd but never have I met a more welcoming one. From the moment I arrived until I left they made me feel like part of the family.

I would also like to extend an extra special thanks to the people from 50+Proud for the great discussions after the film, Jihad for Love. It was a lot of fun to sit (my feet were killing me, as you might have picked up on when I sat with my heels off in my stockings) and talk about how excellent we have it here in Canada and how tough it is for others. And other than being invited to join 50+ (haven't quite reached that milestone, lol) it was an excellent and relaxing evening. And Mike, thank you for walking with me back to my hotel.

And what can I say about Saturday. Man, what a party (or was that just me?) Again I was made to feel like I had always been part of the crowd. It was great hanging with Tara-Lynn and getting the chance to do some dancing, which I don't do very often. Everyone was just so friendly with the people I met Friday waving and yelling to me and lord knows how many times I was hugged and wished a happy Pride. And, of course, the entertainment was superb. I especially enjoyed the London, Ontario band The Joys and Sofonda Cox was the icing on the cake with two great sets. Another fun bit was the burlesque performer, it was a nice touch.

To you out there who are thinking about attending Pride in the future, I would highly recommend going to Windsor Pride. Even if you have never been to one before the people in Windsor will not only put you at ease but make you feel like you have always been a member of the community. I know I am planning on attending again next year and you should too.
